Michael Horvit (b. 1932) studied composition at Yale, Harvard, and
Boston Universities. His teachers include Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss,
Walter Piston, Quincy Porter and Gardner Read. Professor emeritus at
the University of Houston Moores School of Music he served for many
years as Head of Theory and Composition there. For 25 years he also
served as music director at Congregation Emanu El, Houston. Dr.
Horvit is co-author of four widely used theory texts, and is the
recipient of awards from organizations that include ASCAP, BMI, the
Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation, Meet the Composer, the National
Endowment for the Arts, the Fridge Trust, and the University of
Houston.
