The planet Earth is quickly turning
The planet Earth is quickly turning Into storage bins of useless Knowledge, Useless Music, Empty Art preserved for No one, Save for those who still add more, (One must repeat no other's actions), Save for those who still insist That More is Good, (One dare repeat no other's Precious, useless thinking, No one else's lofty stupid works, No other's any anything.) The planet's spinning tapes And bits of data, Disks of noise and atoms, Screens of pictures, Words and labels, Signals, circuits, sounds, Circuits, signals, circuits, sounds. Control, control, control! They still pretend their culture Isn't really dead! A curse that God creates a man To be an image of Himself, Evolves a planet filled with those Who must invent, Who must produce, Who must create as well. A curse that all their work is garbage, Useless trash, and useless truth, Achieved so briefly, Destined for the super nova, Just like ev'ry ev'rything. But still there's those who must add more, Who must concoct some precious, lofty, something else. Some new machine, Another poem, Some new device without a copy, Made because it hadn't been before. How nice it is to still believe The culture really isn't dead. Pretend, pretend, pretend! The planet Earth is slowing down. It's bins are full. It's space is filled. It's atoms are all gone. It's people safely stored on Everlasting microchips. Eternal life for those who haven't been erased. And with them still their music plays, Some notes from random function keys. The rhythm's not quite right, But what the Hell, It still goes on. Spinning tapes and bits of data, Disks of noise, And quite a few electrons, Screens of pictures, Words and labels, Signals, circuits, sounds. The planet Earth is slowing down. Circuits, signals, screens, Signals, circuits, Sounds, sounds, sounds! Jody Nagel March 28, 1987 |
