The primary lesson that prophets and messiahs always fail to grasp is that their words, concepts and ideas will inevitably be distorted beyond recognition by later-day generations. Their sayings will be institutionally revered, and their radical messages will be tamed, civilized and rendered innocuous. Zealous disciples will collide with the resulting established rituals, and this conflict will manifest itself in damaging ways, in endless permutations of misunderstanding, and, in the long run, one will wonder if the lesser harm to humanity would not have been for enlightened individuals to just keep their enlightenment to themselves and leave everybody else out of it.

(I know. This is endlessly recursive. I shouldn't have said even this.)
